MBA Admissions Essays - The Island :: MBA College Admissions Essays

There were no tropical groups, grinning islanders, or promptly accessible sun tan moisturizers. There were, in any case, three men of their word wearing armed force exhaustion donning rifles and a despondent mien. Margarita Island looked increasingly like the phase for a military overthrow than an excursion heaven. What anticipated us on the little plot of land 20 miles north of the Venezuelan coast was a run-down inn, Porto Fino Mare. Showing up with seven colleagues from school and a plane loaded with American sightseers, it felt as though the island's populace had multiplied with our appearance. We attempted to make the best of an awful circumstance, all things considered, there was as yet a wealth of blue sky and perfectly clear sea. Albeit every one of the seven of us went to a similar school, we were still just associates. By the third night on the island we made a decaying bamboo table our wellspring of diversion. Lounging around that table, we had to involve ourselves with so mething novel, discussion. From the outset, exchange seemed as though bunch treatment. Where are you from? What carries you to this island today around evening time? After some time, be that as it may, our conversation moved to more profound waters. A portion of my schoolmates realized that I had been running a web organization, yet no one knew precisely what or how I was doing it. I clarified about the two books I had composed and broadly expounded on how I was utilizing the web as an advertising instrument. I discussed the abnormal looks I got from peers, while printing out a huge number of pages in the school library. Â My companions appeared to be really keen on how I could deal with a fruitful organization, yet what occurred next amazed me. My regularly saved school associates got excited. They began offering new thoughts and bearings for my business.

Blog Archive Monday Morning Essay Tip Change Up Essay Structure

Blog Archive Monday Morning Essay Tip Change Up Essay Structure Writing can be challenging for many business school applicants, and some have particular difficulty changing their essay structure from one essay to the next. For example, a candidate might choose to use a quote at the beginning of an essay to create a sense of urgency: “This cannot be fixed. This cannot be fixed!” I stared blankly at the broken machinery and knew that the next few hours would be crucial…. Using this kind of attention-grabbing technique can be acceptable under certain circumstances, but a candidate should never use the same technique twice (and definitely not three times!) in one application. By starting more than one essay the same way, the writer is effectively sending the reader the message that he/she understands a gimmick but does not truly know how to tell a compelling story in his/her own way. This is also a quick way to lose the admissions readers interest! So be sure to vary your approach with each new essay within a single application. We work with our candidates to ensure that their ideas are presented in fresh and different ways, to captivate the admissions committee with each introduction and, indeed, each essay. Optimum Fuel Choice to Ensure Power Supply - 2423 Words

Energy security is a varied and complex concept that relates to import dependency, energy prices, the capacity and integrity of the supply and distribution infrastructure, fuel diversity and environmental concerns. After evaluating the advantages, disadvantages and policy requirements of the three energy sources (gas, coal and nuclear) we have made the conclusion that encompasses the security of supply issue for Ireland, UK and France, for their future fuel sustainability. Introduction This paper investigates the optimum fuel choice to ensure security of supply. In this case we will be closely looking at Ireland, UK and France, and analysing nuclear, coal and gas as our fuel sources. The different situations we will be examining will include their advantages and disadvantages, their effect on the climate, the possible effect they will have on future electricity prices and the policy that will accompany them. We will compare each energy source with the other, and conclude which fuel source has shown it to be the leader in the security of supply scenario. We will begin with the analysis of gas a fuel source to ensure security of supply in Ireland, and thus incorporating UK and France in our trends and estimations. Marijuana Legalization A Missed Opportunity For California

Cannabis Legalization, A Missed Opportunity for California It has been estimated that the legalization and subsequent taxation (excise and sales tax) of cannabis in California could generate anywhere between $990 million and $1.4 billion annually in tax revenue. Additionally it has been estimated that legalization could reduce statewide enforcement costs by $150 million annually. Considering the number of human service agencies, departments, and programs that have had their budgets either significantly reduced or cut altogether, why has California forgone the opportunity to use the revenue and savings associated with cannabis legalization to support K-12 and higher education, early childhood, and elderly programs? What’s the Problem with†¦show more content†¦The USNDA encouraged states to make their respective laws uniform with the federal Narcotic Drug and Import and Export Acts regarding the control, sale, and use of narcotic drugs and suggested the prohibition of cannabis at the state level. The intent of the USNDA was to effectively safeguard and regulate narcotic drugs throughout all of the states. In 1934, the USNDA was disseminated to states. Initially only 9 states adopted the USNDA but a successful propaganda campaign eventually led to all states adopting the USNDA. In 1937, Congress passed the Marihuana Tax Act (MTA) which imposed special use taxes on individuals who imported, manufactured, produced, compounded, sold, dispensed, prescribed, administered, or gave away cannabis and required that the aforementioned individuals register with the federal government. The MTA also imposed penalties (up to $2,000 fine and/or up to 5 years imprisonment) for violators of its provisions. The MTA and subsequent federal regulations dissuaded physicians from prescribing cannabis, retail pharmacists from selling cannabis, and the cultivation/manufacturing of medical cannabis. By 1954, penalties for illegal cannabis possession and sale were a minimum of 1 to 10 years and 5 to 15 years, respectively. In 1969, the United States (US) Supreme Court ruled that the MTA violated the 5th amendment. Congress repealed the MTA in 1970 but chaptered the Controlled substances Act (CSA) into law that same year. The CSA

Page 4 The Anatomy of a Penis The penis is as complex as any other part of the human body, despite a deceivingly simple appearance. Moreover, since the two functions of the penis are well-known to en and women alike, there is a tendency to think that everybody knows everything worth knowing about it. However, there are always a few questions left unanswered or some obscure bit of information that nobody bothers to remember and which may become interesting in a certain context. Basically, the human penis is made up of two parts: the shaft and the glass (also known as the head). The shaft is not a muscle as some have suggested. It is made of three columns of tissue, one of which continues forward to form the glass. These columns are called the Corpus Sponginess, which arms the underside of the penis and the glass, and the Corpora Cavernous, which are two chambers of tissue located next to each other on the upper side of the penis. The shaft is covered in skin, while the glass supports the loosely attached fold of skin known as the foreskin. The foreskin is attached to the underside of the pens, in an area called the freemen. And, lastly, the penis is traversed from base to tip by the Urethra. This canal serves as a passage for both urine, produced in the bladder, and the sperm, produced in the testes. Erection is achieved by filling the two Corpora Cavernous chambers with blood. Unlike some other mammals, humans have no erectile bone and have to rely instead on engorgement with blood to reach erection. When the erection is triggered by sexual stimulation, the arteries that bring blood to the penis dilate in order to increase blood flow. The sponge-like Corpora Cavernous fills up Page 5 with blood, which makes the penis stiff. The stiffer tissues constrict the veins that carry blood away from the penis in order to maintain the erection. Every male baby is born with a full set of reproductive organs. However, these organs are not fully developed and remain so until the boy enters puberty. At puberty, usually between the ages of 10 and 14, the pituitary gland starts secreting hormones that induce the testicles to produce testosterone. This is the hormone that controls all the physical and many of the psychological traits that define man. Its presence ensures the development of bigger bones and higher muscle mass in men. It is also responsible for the increase in penis and testicles size, the apparition of pubic hair and the deeper tone of the male voice. The penis stops growing at the end of puberty, which comes around the age to 18 However, there are many environments I doctors that may delay or accelerate the onset or the end of puberty. This meaner that some men may experience penis growth beyond the age of 18. A common urban myth that almost everyone has heard, is the idea that penis size is linked to the size of another body part. The most common versions of this myth focus on the size of hands, feet, nose or overall height to determine the size of the penis. Actually, there is no such link. Although the development of the penis in the embryo is controlled by the same genes as the limbs, penis growth at puberty is entirely overfed by testosterone and has nothing to do with the other parts of the body. Some men are born with big penises. This is an undisputed fact of life whose causes are still a mystery to science. As stated above, there is no correlation between penis and body size. Studies conducted on bats have shown that the sexual organs and the brain require large quantities of energy to develop. At some point, the developing embryo decides whether it wants a bigger brain or a bigger set of sexual organs. However, science is still at a loss to understand how the decision is made and why. Page 6 And, lastly, a word on penis exercises. The exercises that Punishments promote are designed to force the columns of tissue to expand in both length and girth. This is done by exerting pressure on the shaft and helping the cells that make up the tissues to multiply. Obviously, the aim of these exercises is to make the Corpora Cavernous hold more blood in order to increase the size of the erect pens. Contrary to what many skeptics think, the careful and sustained exercising of the penis is a safe and effective way of increasing length and girth. Psychological Benefits of a Bigger Penis The face of a man is usually an open book to most women. They can read practically anything in our faces. Vive known ladies who could tell the size of my pens, bank account and the status of my sex life by taking only one look at me. Of course, the look was followed by the ladys departure in the opposite direction. Failure always leaves a mark on your face, Just like success does. And women can read those marks awfully well. Its even worse when you have a small penis and failure tends to follow failure in a pattern that grows bigger every day. The first thing women notice about a an is his confidence level. A stoop-shouldered man with a downcast look has very little chance of actually getting a date from a decontrolling lady. On the other hand, a broad-cheesed guy with a confident look in his eyes and a swagger in his step is sure to catch the eye of most women. He may not get every single pretty girl, but hell sure as hell be noticed by each and every one. Trust me, nothing gives a man more confidence than a big penis. A man who knows that the schools dangling in his pants is big enough to satisfy any woman walks around with an l dont nave a care in the world kind to aura. You can bet your elite that women notice that. Women dont care a lot what a man says, since most men have little to say that interests a woman. But they pay strict attention to page 7 the subtle signs in a mans attitude. Women think: If he looks confident, then there must be something about him that makes him so confident. This could be interesting. A big penis is your ticket to that show of confidence that is not an act or a sham, but the real thing. Are you suffering from low-confidence and anxiety? Are you afraid that women may look down on you? Then penis enlargement is the solution for you. The minute you stop worrying, its their turn to be anxious. A big penis has a lot of benefits and no downside that I can think of. Well, maybe if you decide to increase your penis size to 9 or 10 inches; that could be a problem. But if you stick to a nice 8 inches, then youll reap all the benefits. Increased confidence, greater stamina in bed, better control of your ejaculation, longer sex sessions and more pleasure for you and the lady, all these can be yours. Anxiety, depression and low self-esteem have no chance against a big penis and orchard erections that last much longer than before. Women will be impressed by the hefty dick that Just keeps going and men will eye the bulge in your pants with envy. Now thats what I call turning the tables! Do Penis Enlargement Exercises Really Work? Many people are keen to dismiss penis exercises as myths even though they are not familiar with the facts. Penis exercises have been around in one form or other for a very long time. Primitive tribes are still using weights, various objects and exercises to force parts of the human body to change size and achieve a new look. The women of the Padding tribe use metal rings to lengthen their necks, while the people from other tribes hang weights from their lips or ear lobes in order to reach their own standards of beauty. With all these going on, why should it be so hard to believe that the penis was ignored? Especially since we know that it was not. Various penis enlargement techniques have also been reported, especially among the nomad Arabic tribes. Body enhancement techniques performed by males were always tied to the position of the person in question within the tribe or with the manhood initiation rites. Page 8 It seems that men found early on that the human body can be modified using vices or exercises. The only traction devices at their disposal for a long period of time were weights, but stretching the penis using ones own hands was Just as g as any device. The basic principle behind body enhancement is the adaptability of the human body in response to external stimuli. Everybody knows that the extra physical effort put into working out at the gym will trigger an increase in the size of the muscles that have to sustain the effort. Similarly, repeated exercises focused on the pens, will force the body to start multiplying the cells that make up the penis issues and to increase both the length and girth of the penis in order to cope with the new situation. The best known penis enlargement exercise is the Jell. This exercise is designed to enlarge the penis using milking movements in order to increase the blood flow into the corpora cavernous, the sponge-like tissues of the penis. The increased blood flow will, in time, force the tissues to expand and increase both the flaccid and erect sizes of the pens. DRP. Brian Richards conducted a study of penis enlargement exercises in the sass and found that the Jell helped nearly 90 percent of patients increase their penis size. The gains ranged in size of course, but it was proven that men could add an inch or more to their penises. Despite the rabid skepticism of those who cannot be bothered to check the facts, common sense and evidence point to the fact that penis enlargement exercises do work. No man who could use an extra inch or two in length or girth should write them off until hes actually tried them. Many skeptics have been pleasantly surprised after embarking on a penis exercise program, so why not give it a go? I had been doing the exercises religiously for about 5 6 weeks and only noticed flaccid gains and a small bit in EGG and EL, (although harder erections and a huge increase in horniness were noticed within the first week), then I had a growth spurt and 1/2 literally appeared in a week. Unfortunately as a result of this, several products have crept onto the market with the aim of making a quick buck and benefiting from mans natural insecurities, regardless of whether the product is a safe and effective choice for a larger penis. Here we will give you a rife guide on which methods you need to avoid if you are going to successfully and safely enlarge your pens. Weights are probably the oldest penis enlargement technique around, and by far the simplest to operate. However, simplicity is not always the best option and this certainly rings true for weight hanging. Weight hanging is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous techniques of penis enlargement because of the amount of weight needed to create any lasting effect. Known dangers of this method include; impotence, ligament damage, painful erections, deformity and stretch marks. In addition, by only stretching the penis in en direction as weights do, meaner that if you gain any length it is most likely to be at the expense of girth size, so you could end up with a longer but much thinner pens. Another common option for the misinformed man is the penis pump, made famous by a host of adult movie stars who claim their large penis secret is the regular use of a penis pump. Lets get something straight, these adult stars almost always have a large penis to start with, that is often why they are an adult star in the first place. The only thing they use a penis pump for is to gain an erection to its fullest extent for long enough to perform their scene. Age 12 People often wrongly believe that penis pumps have been proven as a long term solution to enlarge the penis, this is incorrect. Pumps have been proven to help with impotence since they force blood into the pens, this can often result in a larger than normal penis as it promotes a stronger than normal erection. However, the effects of pumps are temporary, they will help gain an erection for a few minutes but will doing very little to enlarge the penis in the long term. Pumps are not only ineffective at providing long term size gains, but they also come complete with a series of dangers or any man that chooses to use them. For starters the mechanical forcing of blood into the penis is difficult to control and therefore often results in severe bruising, blisters and even burst blood vessels within the penis. Repeated use can bring on impotence when the body begins to rely on mechanical stimulation to produce an erection, further risks include deformation and diseases. Next up is the magic pill scam that is often reported in the media. Penis pills have popped up for sale all over the internet oaten Witt wild claims to adding several inches, curing impotence and ending premature ejaculation. Dont you think that if a pill could really do all of this then the medical community would be knocking down doors to prescribe them to the individuals who need them? The truth is that pills cannot enlarge the penis by themselves. They can, however, be used in conjunction with a more reliable penis enlargement method such as exercises to help speed up and enhance gains. Pills work by increasing blood flow, which in turn meaner the exercises have more to work with and therefore can produce gains more quickly. Exercises are more than capable of working alone though, so pills should only been seen as a supplement rather than a must have! And last of all, surgery, the latest penis enlargement technique to emerge. Surgery is expensive, not very safe and definitely not under customer control. The results of any type of plastic surgery are somewhat unpredictable and that goes double for the penis. This technique is mostly an option for rich people who can afford the best surgeons around to enlarge their penises. Any mistake here could mean impotence and the end of your sex life. I have yet to see a surgeon who will guarantee results, they simply will not, page 13 which shows that even the professionals carrying out the treatment do not have omelet confidence in what they are doing. By all meaner go ahead and look into surgery, perhaps you will be one of the lucky ones who is completely satisfied with the results. However, bear in mind that surgery is not only the most expensive option, but also one of the riskiest. Furthermore, surgery gone wrong is often irreversible; surely it makes sense to try a natural solution first? So, if you dont trust ointments, weights, pumps or surgery, then penis enlargement exercises are the best way to go. You can perform them at your leisure, in the privacy of your own home. It is up to you o decide the length of sessions and the intensity of exercises. You can stop at any time and start again whenever you feel like it. What could be better than that? Advice for Beginners The first thing that you should keep in mind when starting your penis enlargement program is that you need to put your willpower behind this. Just like everything else, you have to stick to penis enlargement to see results. Dont start on something Just to find out two weeks later that it bores the hell out of you. Penis enlargement works only if you strive to do the exercises right and stick to a regular routine. Bone up on knowledge. Yes, you got that right. Just like everything else (l never tire of this phrase), you need to know as much as possible about penis enlargement. This is the best way to see where others have failed and to understand what is it youre doing and why youre doing it. Bettor your exercise session, measure your penis Witt a ruler (see next section). Do exaggerate! This is something you arent going to show to anybody else (unless you want to) and theres no reason to lie to yourself. If you exaggerate now, you wont be able to correctly identify gains in the future, which usually leads to denomination and allure. Dont measure yourself too often, once every Page 14 four or six weeks is enough to show you how much youve gained. Dont expect results to appear overnight. It may take a month or more for the first gains to show up. Just stay the course and youll reach your goal. The penis is tissue and not muscle, so whereas muscles are fast to grow in size as a response to a genuine need, the penis is simply tissue and it takes much longer to force tissue to expand. If youre interested in good results and safe enlargement, you could Join a professional program of penis enlargement exercises. The best programs come with detailed explanations, photos and videos in order to make sure that you perform the exercises correctly every time and will offer you a dedicated support team should you have questions that need answering. Penis enlargement routines are usually preceded and followed by warm up and down sessions. Its important that you do not skip these sessions. They help get your penis ready for a good workout and for the healing and rebuilding process that follows exercises. Warm up sessions decrease the risk of injuries, while warming down helps the penis to heal faster. You should also remember that there are no set routines. Feel free to experiment with the exercises and find out what works for you. Long time program members can tell you about their own routines and teach you what works best. All you need to do is ask for help and people wont say no. Veterans are always willing to share with beginners what theyve learnt in months and years of penis enlargement. Experimentation and expert advice are the best way to maximize your gains and help your penis enlarge faster. Just make sure you are always careful and not rushing into anything. Nobody wants injuries to spoil the party. The next section contains the information that is the icing on the cake for this e-book. We will now explain to you how to correctly measure your penis and then we will show you some of the exercises that can get you started on the way to the bigger penis you desire! Page 15 Measuring the Penis First you need to measure your starting lengths, both flaccid and erect. We also recommend that you keep a logbook of your gains. Remember, when measuring be negative and round down the totals so that when you do see gains you dont think its just because you didnt measure correctly! You should only measure once every

The revolutionary war and its famous writers that effected it. Authors such as thomas paine, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry.

The revolutionary war and its famous writers that effected it. Authors such as thomas paine, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry. The Revolutionary War created the pathway to what we are now. We became independent and it gave us freedom from Britain's King. The war led us to the new life we wanted without control of outside countries. But without the encouragement of writers to help us in our time of need, things still would not have been that easy. Some of the great writers that influenced others to make history happen would be Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry. These men wrote articles that encouraged others to stand up for what they believed in, and they wrote remarkable speeches that helped us become who we are. They had the courage to write their thoughts into writing that inspired many to fight for what they believed in. Without the help of literature within the period of our time, maybe things would've gone differently. The winter of 1776 was a dreadful time for George Washington and his troops.English: This is a high-resolution image of the Un...They had little food, inadequate shelter, a nd many were deserting (Berstein 161). Into this horrible situation came Thomas Paine. In England, he had moved, without success, through several occupations. He then began to write essays supporting America's fight for independence, shortly after his arrival in 1774. In December of 1776, he started to write a series of articles entitled The Crisis. His words inspired many soldiers to enlist in the army and encouraged them to continue fighting. After the publication of his articles, the first anti-slavery movement, The American Antislavery Society, was found (Katz 1). His beliefs of universal order, in human perfectibility, and in the power of reason, guided him throughout his life to express himself and persuade others to fight for what they believed in. Yet Paine, a fuzzy historical figure of the 1700s, is remembered mostly for one or two...

Models of Leadership Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words

Models of Leadership - Essay Example & Angelo K., 2004). This factor is the key in leadership. There are a number of leadership styles that are proposed in various books journals, periodicals and the internet. In this paper, only some of them are discussed very briefly as it is not possible to discuss each and every leadership style also these are discussed briefly so that these can be applied to the selected organization in much more detail. But are these styles of leadership actually followed in the organizations today To look into the practical application of the various leadership styles, a company that specializes in the manufacturing of computer hardware components, Softech Company is selected and leadership styles followed at two different levels of management are discussed and analyzed. There is an in-depth analysis conducted on the style of leadership that these managers follow and the way they deal with their subordinates and what influence their subordinates have through their personalities. For the purpose of analyzing the application of leadership, Softech Company was selected. The company background and rationale for selection is discussed later in the paper. Two levels of the organization were focused for the analysis of the leadership style possessed by the leaders. One top level executive was chosen for the purpose of analysis and another middle level manager's leadership style was studied. The names and complete designations are kept confidential as the respondents didn't want to disclose this information. The styles of these managers vary broadly in terms of their approach to the tasks and subordinates. Models of Leadership Definitions The different models of leadership that will be discussed in this section are discussed under three theories of leadership, namely; 1. Trait Theory 2. Behavior Theory 3. Situational Theory The different models under these theories are discussed below: 1. Trait Theory This theory is based on the presumptions that leaders are born with some special traits. These traits are not possessed by those people who follow the leaders and are unique to the leaders only. Stogdill's & Mann's Research The specific traits that are possessed by the leaders (Stogdill R., 1948) that differentiate the leaders from others (Mann R., 1959) are five in number and are as follows: a. height of energy and activity b. intelligence c. self-confidence d. task relevant knowledge e. dominance Other Traits by Various Leaders Various famous leaders in the organizations have identified a number of traits that they think are possessed by the leaders. These traits are as in the table 1 in the appendix. Thus, these traits were identified by various leaders and all of them have different traits identified but the common element still remains the 'social influence'. 1. Behavior Theory Unlike the trait theory, the behavioral aspect of leadership focuses on the behaviors of the leaders

The role of women in the society Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The role of women in the society - Essay Example The idea here is that even in deprived households, the issues that affect females may be very different from those that affect the males, thus sometimes making the consequences of such poverty harder for the woman (123). As a matter of fact, Sen writes that in developing countries, where poverty levels are high, the mortality rates for women are higher than those of women (124). In Sen’s opinion, most women faced with poverty find it hard to claim a personal identity and often refer to themselves in relation to their family. This lack of personal identity translates to low levels of personal welfare for the women (124). Accordingly, it is common to find households in which women get the least amount of food, medicine, and other kinds of services needed for survival (125). This means that most of the time, women sacrifice their wellbeing for the sake of the family’s welfare. In the end, women become less economically stable as compared to men. 2. Reexamining the role of women In as far as women redefining their role in the society, Pearson’s main point of argument is based on the relationship between women and economic empowerment. Concerning paid work, Pearson is of the opinion that most women seek employment in search of money needed to enable them fulfill their gendered functions in the society (201). Pearson, however, challenges the idea that women can only be empowered through paid labor, a system advocated for by capitalist ideologies. The contentious issue, here, is that the kind of paid labor that most women are incorporated into is often left out of the formal economy. This is to mean that most women in the paid workforce do not enjoy the associated benefits such as flexible working hours, social protection, fair pay, and protection... In as far as women redefining their role in the society, Pearson’s main point of the argument is based on the relationship between women and economic empowerment. Concerning paid work, Pearson is of the opinion that most women seek employment in search of money needed to enable them to fulfill their gendered functions in the society (201). Pearson, however, challenges the idea that women can only be empowered through paid labor, a system advocated for by capitalist ideologies. The contentious issue, here, is that the kind of paid labor that most women are incorporated into is often left out of the formal economy. This is to mean that most women in the paid workforce do not enjoy the associated benefits such as flexible working hours, social protection, fair pay, and protection of reproductive health, among others (202). Thus, many women end up falling in the informal employment bracket, where they are involved in numerous income-generating activities, as opposed to a particula r profession. It is also, according to Pearson, a common phenomenon to find micro-credit institutions that lend money to women to start up money-making activities, and then later repay the institutions at a small profit (206). However, when these women become empowered economically, it is often assumed that this translates to power shifts in the household (Pearson, 207). This assumption is flawed since, although the women become empowered, in most cases she bears the burden of the loans alone, while the husband remains the head of household operations.

Alex and Patrick - Separated at birth Essay Example for Free

Alex and Patrick Separated at birth Essay For my project, I have chosen to compare and analyse the characterisation of two of literatures most psychotic characters, Alex from A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and Patrick Bateman from American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. Patrick and Alex are from, and live in two completely different worlds, but what I aim to prove is that if you look past the superficial differences of the stories, the base characteristics and emotions of the two characters are the same. The Books Both American Psycho and A Clockwork Orange are considered to be satires and black comedies. Ellis version of 80s New York and a Wall Street executive gone insane is considered a satire of the 80s obsession with greed, money, power, women, drugs and getting a reservation at Dorsia. It is about Patrick bateman, a successful stockbroker, who by day goes to work, discusses fashion tips with his friends and goes to the most expensive restaurants, and by night, is a psychopathic mass murder. It is derivative of, and has been praised as the darkest satire since A Clockwork Orange, Burgess vision of a future run by martial law with teenage criminals running amok is considered a satire on State Censorship, the government and free will. It is about Alex, a fifteen year old boy who goes out raping, stealing and murdering, until he is arrested. When in jail, the state tries to reform him, but end up turning him into nothing more than A Clockwork Orange, a person with no free will, no choice, and no life. Have the government gone too far? Both books have been viewed as misogynistic, discriminating against social classes, and in some parts racist, but regardless of this the books are still considered cult classics. Lifestyle and Friends Patrick and Alex are both given backgrounds, complete with friends and lifestyles. In American Psycho, Ellis depicts Patricks lifestyle as restaurants, designer clothes, attractive women, cocaine and martinis. In contrast, Burgess shows Alex as being from a poor family, a convict, and a victim of the system. Patricks lifestyle is written about much more than Alexs, as Ellis intersperses Patricks deeds with passages about work, the difficulty of getting a reservation at a good restaurant, and which tie he should wear to match his new Valentino suit. Burgess does write about Alexs life in some detail, such as the purchasing of a new record, what he is wearing The heighth (not a spelling mistake) of Nadsat fashion, and his favourite places (The Korova milk bar for some Moloko plus). The extract from American Psycho marked Friends describes the beginning of an evening out for Patrick. Notice how Ellis starts talking about what everyone is wearing as though it is relevant to the story line, however it is relevant to the theme, showing the 80s obsession with designer labels. It seems as though Patrick feels it is neccesary to identify where everyones clothes are from. The following page shows Patrick giving out fashion tips and everyone listening as though he is a fashion guru. In the extract, Ellis shows the banter between Patrick and his friends, McDermott, Van Patten and Price. Patrick doesnt mention any of his deeds to his friends, or as part of the narration at this point. There doesnt seem to be any kind of a hierarchy within the group, everyone seems to be equal, although we do tend to see Patrick as the main person in the group, due to the first person narration. In contrast, Alex is the leader of his little group, and this is apparent from the start, as Alex bosses around the other three, especially Dim, whom he bullies constantly (I think he came up with the name in reference to his intelligent). Alex also describes what he is wearing, but only three times when it is neccesary, and not in as much detail as Patrick goes into. Although Alex works with his friends, or droogs, they dont seem to discuss their crimes between them. Paradoxically, Patrick, who works alone, brings up his crimes in conversations with his friends and fianci e, but they are either not listening, take it as a joke, or are too drunk to understand or remember! Alexs lifestyle is reflective of the chronological setting of the book, as it is set in one possible future, where it seems martial law rules, and everyone who is old enough to work has to work. Alex is only 15, and is not old enough to work, so he goes out stealing to earn money. Although, when you strip away the superficial characteristics, you can see that Patrick is just an upscale, 80s yuppie version of Alex, as both of them are brash, arrogant, brutal, self-involved and obsessed with music, appearances, and violence. Music Both Patrick and Alex have an obsession with music. Patrick listens to more contemporary styles of music, such as Huey Lewis and the News, Whitney Houston and Genesis, whereas Alex favours the more classical music of Beethoven and Handel. Music seems to affect both Patrick and Alex in different ways. In American Psycho, Ellis has written entire chapters devoted to the above bands, so the inclusion of music in the novel may be something personal to Ellis, because hes done his research, although it does also add to the 1980s feel of the book. Apart from this, the chapters do seem somewhat irrelevant to the story, as the preceding and following chapters have nothing to do with the music. Both Patrick and Alex feel it necessary to list and describe their sound systems. Ellis uses two whole pages describing a consignment of top of the range technology that arrives at Patricks house. This is showing the reader Patricks wealth, rather than his love for music, whereas in A Clockwork Orange, Alex describes his stereo as The pride of my jeezny. Later on in the book, he criticises two girls stereos, then says Come with me and hear all proper, meaning that his stereo is far superior to theirs. Patrick merely reviews and talks about the music, whereas Alex becomes engulfed in it, which is why he describes listening to classical music is gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh. He also uses other words such as bliss, heaven, Wonder of Wonders, proving that music to him is not just music, but an emotional thing, and as though he physically feels something. Alex compares listening to music like being on drugs. Later in the book, after being treated with the Ludivico Technique, Alex is inadvertently conditioned against all emotional music, and after being forced to listen to Otto Skadeligs third symphony, he tries to kill himself. It is the ultimate irony that the one thing he loved so passionately is the thing that causes him to attempt suicide.

Gideon vs. Wainwright :: essays research papers

Clarence Earl Gideon was arrested in 1961 and charged with breaking and entering a pool hall with intent to commit theft, by taking money out of vending machines. What he did at the time was considered a felony. When it came time to have the trial he did not have enough money for a lawyer and asked that one be appointed to defend him. The judge denied the request saying that under Florida state law counsel can be appointed only in a capital offense. Since Gideon didn’t have a lawyer and was not educated to defend himself he lost easily to the prosecution. Gideon was then sentenced to five years in prison. He then filed out a writ of certiorari, which is a petition of appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States asking for them to review his case. The Court granted Gideon's request and appointed Abe Fortas to represent him as his lawyer. This was a very controversial issue, because the court faced the decision of whether to go with the laws that the forefathers had come up with or grant people right to counsel so that the truth can be brought out. The issue was whether the state of Florida violated Gideon's Sixth Amendment right to counsel, made applicable to the states by the Fourteenth Amendment, because they did not provide him with the assistance of counsel for his criminal defense. The Court ruled unanimously in Gideon's favor and held that the Fourteenth Amendment included state as well as federal defendants. The Court said that all states must provide an attorney in all felony and capital cases for people who cannot afford one. Through the Fourteenth Amendment due process clause, the Sixth Amendment guarantee of the right to counsel applies to the states. Gideon won his case and took the groundbreaking step in public defense lawyers being there for people that cannot afford a lawyer of their own.

Comparing Honor and Bravery in Beowulf and Sir Gawain and...

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf share several similar qualities. Each story suggests that honor, truth, and heroism are the most important a person can exhibit, though in each tale these are manifested in different ways. Both characters, in attempts to keep these values, make mistakes that endanger their lives. Beowulf is an incredible, and at times unbelievable, hero who can and will attempt to defeat anyone to keep others safe. This will eventually lead to his death as he successfully defeats the Dragon. But as ruling king at the time his subsequent death leaves his people in a worse predicament than before. Now, without a just ruler, the kingdom will possibly undergo uncertainty and chaos as no heir to the throne is†¦show more content†¦Tricked by the Green Knight and Morgan le Faye, Gawain, driven by his sense of duty and honor, must sacrifice his own life for those ideals. I believe that though Gawain is a bit foolish in his quest to lose his head, he did make the correct decision in protecting Arthur. Like King Beowulf, the loss of Arthur would have been very detrimental to the society at the time. Gawain sacrifices himself in order to preserve Order. The world of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is governed by well-defined codes of behavior, most importantly the code of chivalry. The ideals of chivalry derive from a Christian concept of morality. This sense of morality is somewhat shown in Beowulf as well. Beowulf seeks to kill Grendel, his mother, and the dragon because they pose a threat to the civilized people of the time. A descendent of Cain, Grendel is inherently evil and must be destroyed. But while Beowulf is ever ready and willing to die in his quests, Gawain values his life far more. This also reflects on the influences of Christianity in the two stories. In Beowulf’s world, a man was only immortalized by his actions and in the memories of others. Beowulf took risks so that his deeds would be far more exciting and thus more popular, easier for the story tellers to remember.
